Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program

SLO County Parks encourages strong, young swimmers to register for the Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. This program offers a great opportunity for youngsters to spend quality time with United States Lifeguarding Association (U.S.L.A.) trained open-water instructors. This is a "skill-building" program that emphasizes healthy exercise, teamwork and most of all, FUN!

Discover Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program (1-week program, youth ages 8-11)

Last Revised: April 22, 2013

2013
PROGRAM INFORMATION

  • Perform rescue techniques and learn princliples of beach lifeguarding.
  • Understand responsibilities and expectations of aquatic personnel and first responders.
  • Build teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Learn the ecology and environment of the bay, beach and ocean.
  • Become skilled at open water rescues.
  • Increase swimming skills, speed and endurance.
  • HAVE FUN!!

AGE: Kids ages 10 - 16

SKILL LEVEL TESTING: This program demands above average swimming ability and participants should have a moderate level of comfort swimming in the ocean. All new and returning participants must satisfactorily complete the following Skill Level Tests on the first day of the session they are registered for.

  • 100 yard continuous swim in under 3 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool
  • 10 yard underwater swim
  • tread water for 5 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool

ORIENTATION: Once all participants are checked in there will be an orientation for the participants on the pool deck and a special orientation for parents will take place at Hardie Park.

CODE OF CONDUCT: Unacceptable behavior, language or disrespectful attitude to any person will NOT be tolerated. Non-compliance will result in immediate dismissal from the program and no refund processed.

ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is required for all three weeks. Keep in mind this is a skills-building program so it is very important to attend every day. We have very strong reservations about allowing kids to miss a whole day or more.  Each day builds on the last, and depending on the rest of the class, conditions, and the inherent ability of the ones that miss a day, we might have to hold them out of certain evolutions and rotations in the water if we are not comfortable with their abilities.  We will not stop our progression to get these kids up to speed.

UNIFORM:The CBJG uniform is a t-shirt and board short.  County Parks will provide one t-shirt to the participant but you wll be responsible for purchasing board shorts. We prefer the boardshorts to be ALL BLACK with a second choice of navy. White stitching is ok but no white or light colored piping. Please no obvious logos.  FOR SAFETY AND IDENTIFICAION PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR THEIR UNIFORM EVERY DAY! You are more than welcome to purchase extra t-shirts when you register and you will also have the ability to purchase a CBJG sweatshirt(s) for $30 each.

EQUIPMENT: Wetsuits are required as the water temperatures can range from 55-65 degrees throughout the summer.

WHAT TO BRING EACH DAY: Swimsuit, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, towel, wetsuit, sunscreen, snacks/lunch, water and don't forget SUNSCREEN!!!!

BREAKS: This program does not provide meals. Please bring plenty of water and snacks/lunch. There will be a 1/2 hour supervised lunch break each day.

VOLUNTEER AIDE PROGRAM: Our Volunteer Junior Lifeguard Aides assist staff in the daily operations of the Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. This program helps further develop lifeguarding skills, work habits and leadership skills as well as prepare them for Lifeguard Training. All interested youth must go thru a try-out process to be considered for the program. Please review the requirements and Try-out Information for Volunteer Aides.
