2024 Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguard Program
We are very excited to provide the Cayucos Beach Junior/Discover Lifeguard (CBJG) Program this year.
We encourage strong, young swimmers to register for Cayucos Beach Junior Lifeguards (3-week program) or Discover Junior Lifeguards (1-week program). These programs offer a great opportunity for youngsters to spend quality time with United States Lifeguard Association (U.S.L.A.) trained open-water instructors.

Orientation / Skill Level Testing
There is an orientation for the participants and parents at Hardie Pool on the first day of each session. Uniforms will be distributed to participants as well as schedules and information about what’s expected of the participants.
This program demands above average swimming ability and participants should have a moderate level of comfort swimming in the ocean. All new and returning participants must satisfactorily complete the following Skill Level Tests on the first day of the session.
- 100 yard continuous swim in under 3 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool
- 10 yard underwater swim
- tread water for 5 minutes without touching the bottom or side of the pool
Code of Conduct
Unacceptable behavior, language or disrespectful attitude to any person will NOT be tolerated. Non-compliance will result in immediate dismissal from the program and no refund processed.
Attendance
Attendance is required for all three weeks. Keep in mind this is a skills-building program. It is important to attend every day. We have very strong reservations about allowing kids to miss a whole day or more. Each day builds on the last, and depending on the rest of the class, conditions, and the inherent ability of the ones that miss a day, we might have to hold them out of certain rotations in the water if we are not comfortable with their abilities. We will not stop our progression to get these kids up to speed. Please do not call to ask if they can miss one week or a couple of days because of prior obligations. You will need to find a session that can fit into your schedule.
Uniform
The CBJG uniform is a t-shirt and board short. We provide one t-shirt to all participants but you are responsible for purchasing board shorts. We prefer the board shorts to be ALL BLACK with a second choice of navy. White stitching is okay. FOR SAFETY AND IDENTIFICATION PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR THEIR UNIFORM EVERY DAY! Additional t-shirts and sweatshirts may be purchased through Cayucos Collective.
Daily Requirements
Participants must bring the following items to the program everyday:
- Participants must wear their uniform each day.
- Swimsuit and Wetsuit. Wetsuits are required as the water temperatures can range from 50-60 degrees throughout the summer and the participants spend a majority of their time each day in the water.
- Sunscreen; Each Participant should arrive having already applied sunscreen and bring extra for later applications.
- Towel and warm clothing.
- Hat, Sunglasses, Rashguard (these items are optional)
- Snack and plenty of water. No sharing of water, snacks or personal items are permitted.
Lunch Break
Lunch breaks will be provided and it is recommended that participants bring a shack lunch, snacks and plenty of water.

Discover Junior Lifeguards is a 1-week program that will give participants a chance to see what our regular Junior Lifeguards is all about.
